Saskatoon berries are native to Canadian Western provinces,  as well as other parts of North America, the Saskatoon berry ripens in late July/early August. And although this purply-blue berry looks more like a blueberry, it is actually a cousin to the apple. There are many health benefits and great recipes that you can make out of this tasty berry.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy this berry is by putting it on toast. Saskatoon berry jam is so tasty.

  • the plant is a shrub or small tree.
  • saskatoons are a great source of vitamin C and minerals like iron and copper.
  • Saskatoons thrive on most soils with plenty of organic matter. They need good drainage as the plant does not like wet roots
  • the variety in Alberta is Saskatoon berry (Amelanchier alnifolia).
  • grows in forested areas in plains, foothills, and montane regions.

I generally have had good luck at finding saskatoon berry bushes in the wild where I live in Southern Alberta, but some years they produce better than others. In that case there is the option of the cultivated saskatoon berries that are bigger and juicier than their wild counterparts and orchards can now be found in most Canadian provinces. Many include a ‘you pick’ business model, where adventurous individuals can pay a fee and spend an afternoon picking and filling their own pails with the delicious fruit.

Some of the animals that eat Saskatoons

Many animals enjoy these tasty little treats such as squirrels, chipmunks, woodpeckers and waxwings all like these sweet berries. Bushes are also home sweet home for cardinals and robins.

If you are a dog owner there are different dog treats that have Saskatoon berries in them. Even they will be able to get the health benefits from the berry.
